The Metropolitan Detroit Central Labor Council depends on the participation of its affiliates.  We seek your input, appreciate what you do, and understand that without you, nothing happens.

We can always do everything better, if we do it together.  It takes everyone to make this happen!!

       Metropolitan Detroit AFL-CIO objectives:

To secure United action of all AFL-CIO local unions within Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb County in order to:

(a)  Promote the general welfare,  maintain, protect and advance the interests of all working people in its territory without regard to race, creed, color, national origin, religion, handicap, age, gender or sexual orientation;

(b)  Teach and promote the ideals of labor unity and organization, and lend assistance to the organizing activities of affiliated local unions;

(c)  Assist in furthering the objectives and policies of the AFL-CIO, and organizations affiliated with the AFL-CIO;

(d)  Serve as a means of exchanging information among affiliated bodies in matters of common interest;

(e)  Propose, support and promote legislation favorable to, and oppose legislation detrimental to the interest of organized labor and the community;

(g)  Engage in such other community activities as are consistent with the objectives and principles set forth in the Constitution and policies of the AFL-CIO;

(h)  Assist unions in crisis situations to mobilize support for picket lines, boycotts, contract campaigns, fund-raising and other activities.

REMEMBER THERE IS STRENGTH IN NUMBERS - THE METROPOLITAN DETROIT AFL-CIO REPRESENTS NEARLY 200,000 HARD WORKING MEN AND WOMEN IN WAYNE, OAKLAND, AND MACOMB COUNTY.

SAUNDRA L. WILLIAMS
ELECTED PRESIDENT NOVEMBER 2006

A native Detroiter, Saundra L. Williams has been in the Labor Movement since 1968.  Her career with the union commenced when she became an alternate union steward for AFSCME Local 457 while working in the City of Detroit Health Department. In 1978 she took a position with the Detroit Police Department, as a Police Communications Assistant; now known as a 911 Operator.  During that time, she held numerous union positions, including union steward, trustee, and executive board member.  (Click for Bio)
